Canon Pixma G1220 Driver Download– The Canon Pixma G1220, though not a speedster, prints in the best quality and delivers some of the lowest running costs available. This is great for photo printing for families and home offices with simple output needs.
A long-overdue upgrade to the Canon Pixma G1200 we reviewed four years ago, the Pixma G1220 MegaTank Inkjet Printer ($179.99) is a strange bird among single-function or print-only inkjets.
Being the MegaTank mass ink model—a Canon printer that, like Epson’s EcoTank machines, gets its ink not from cartridges but from containers filled with bottles—sets it apart. What makes it interesting? Its running costs are among the lowest in the business, costing about a third lower than the 2017 version.
Compared to the abundance of entry-level multifunction printers, the G1220 is feature-poor and slow, so it’s not for everyone. But if all you need is to print lots of high-quality photos and the occasional business document or a homework assignment, over time, this Pixma is one of the least expensive ways.
Small and Straight
The single-function printer is designed to be simple to operate: While it supports multiple paper types and sizes, all it does is print.
There is no scanner to make copies or digitize documents. Therefore no automatic document feeder (ADF) is required, which reduces device size compared to all-in-one (AIO) machines.
The Pixma G1220 measures 5.4 by 17.6 by 13 inches (HWD) with the tray closed and weighs a slim 10.6 pounds. It’s the same size but about a pound lighter than its predecessor G1200 and much smaller and lighter than the semi-portable HP Tango X’s award-winning Editor’s Choice.
Epson’s dedicated consumer-grade photo printer, the Expression Photo HD XP -15000 Wide Format Inkjet Printer (another PCMag favorite), is much larger, as it can hold up to 13 by 19 inches of paper.
Paper handling comprises one 100-sheet drawer that doubles as a 20-sheet premium photo paper tray when needed. In comparison, the HP Tango X holds only 50 sheets, and the Epson XP-15000 holds up to 250 sheets.
Print-only machines also don’t require much going through the control panel. As you can see in the image below, the G1220 only has a few buttons and status indicators.
If you notice a lack of Wi-Fi or wireless network control, the G1220 doesn’t support Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, NFC, or Bluetooth. The only connectivity option is USB (bring your cable), meaning you can connect a Windows or macOS laptop or desktop but not handheld.
Software Packages and Custom Papers
Easy-PhotoPrint Editor is, as you may have guessed, an image editing and enhancement program that helps you prepare your photos for printing.
You can resize, crop, and apply correction and enhancement filters like sharpening or removing red-eye. PosterArtist Lite is like that, too, an app for creating posters and other photo settings.
You can further beautify your images by printing them on specialty paper such as 5-inch square glossy, double-sided matte paper, Canon magnetic and affixable photo paper, or iron-on transfers. (This and other specialty media are available at Canon’s online store(Opens in a new window).)
Slow Document Pages and Fast Snapshots
Canon rates the G1220 at 9.1 pages each moment (ppm) for dark and 5ppm for variety. This speed will before long become drawn-out on the off chance that you print many long records or enormous photographs. To print duplex pages, you should physically flip the stack.
I ran the test over a USB connection from our Intel Core i5 PC running Windows 10 Pro.
For our first test, I logged Pixma while printing our 12-page Microsoft Word document. The G1220 averages 8.9ppm, just below its rated speed. These results are average among the printers mentioned here; The Epson XP-15000, for example, hit 7.9ppm while the HP Tango X won at 9.6ppm.
Next, I timed G1220 while printing our colorful and complex business document consisting of an Adobe Acrobat PDF containing business graphics and typography of various sizes and colors, a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet with various charts and graphs, and a PowerPoint handout including business charts. Full color. . Then I combined those results with the text document time and came up with an average score of 5.2ppm.
It’s also average for a printer in this class, although the Tango trails by a pathetic 1.8ppm. To finish the test, I timed the G1220 while printing two of our colorful and detailed 4-by-6-inch photos. The average print time is 52 seconds per photo, which is not fast but respectable. (Tango takes 59 seconds.)
The good news is that the G1220’s output is worth the wait, especially the photos. Images are printed with better-than-acceptable detail and accurate, brilliant colors.
The G1220 also does a decent job with our business documents, although a full-page graphic is almost too much for that; it also prints it very slowly. But entry-level inkjets aren’t designed to print full-page stacks of flyers.
Pixmas usually prints good-looking, readable text with attractive spacing and well-formed characters, and this one is no exception. The G1220’s print quality barely makes up for its slowness—almost.
Printing for Money
More than anything else, the Pixma G1220’s main attraction is its extremely low running costs—about 0.3 cents per page for monochrome and 0.8 cents for color. And Canon has sweetened the deal by including two 170ml black ink bottles, totaling around 1,800 black pages in the box. According to Canon, three 70ml color bottles (cyan, magenta, and amber) are good for 7,700 prints.
Those numbers are roughly the same for most Canon MegaTank, Epson EcoTank, and HP Smart Tank Plus printers (though the EcoTank color page costs 0.9 cents). But Epson offers two years’ worth of ink with some EcoTank engines, which is the best value.
To be sure, printers alone are rare, especially at the entry level. Still, if you print a few hundred photos and only the occasional document each month, the Pixma G1220 is relatively inexpensive to buy and use. When you run out of ink, a set of three 70ml color bottles costs just $12.99, and a 170ml black bottle costs $17.99.
Overall, it’s a simple machine that prints slowly but at a very low cost per page. The Pixma G1220 offers a reasonable way to print stacks of photos and other pages for you and your family—if you and your family can be patient.
