Easy to use with useful features

You also have access to templates such as stationery and calendars. In addition, you can still access the MG8250 using Canon’s Easy-PhotoPrint application (iEPP – App Store/EPP – Android Market). This allows you to immediately share your most beautiful photo moments with people at home or print them, so they are waiting for you when you get home. This device also has the capability for scanning functions. It is possible to scan documents and send them directly to any PC on the wireless network. In addition, you can also print blank CDs/DVDs/Blu-rays with your designs so that your collection looks great.

Performance

Scan: Scan quality options for Photos: 75-600dpi. You can also scan to PDF, TIFF, or JPEG, for Movies: 300, 400, 600, 1200, 2400, 4800dpi, and scan to TIFF or JPEG.

Scanning Film: Scanners sometimes don’t like the idea of ​​scanning a strip of film shorter than six full frames and just saying: “No film found.” Scanning other strips of the film is generally okay, although often the scanner detects only 2 of the six images, other times, it detects and scans all five frames correctly (beginning of the film, so one is not a frame).

This largely depends on how well the images are exposed and aligned and assuming the images are well exposed at the correct distance. Then the scanner copes perfectly with detecting all photos. Once scanned, the program lets you change the settings to get the right exposure. The film scanner supports the scanning of 35mm film (4/6 frames) or four individual slides. The example shown above was scanned with the default settings without post-processing.

Printing: The black and white print is impressive, with neutral black and gray tones. With a dedicated photo black, PGBK (Black Page) for text print, and a dedicated gray ink cartridge, the black and white print results are good, very good, and really match expectations. The print initially comes out a little magenta, but after 5-10 minutes settles down to sharp black and white photos with deep blacks and good contrast.

The black and white photo scan did not fully represent the actual print; with the scan showing a magenta print, we re-scanned the same image on our office scanner (Epson Perfection 3200 Photo). The scan was much more representative of the actual print. Although it would be best to scan the black and white image manually from a computer, it will allow you to scan it as a black and white image.

This printer can print some awe-inspiring prints, with a full A4 color photo print taking 3 minutes at High Quality. It is possible to see that high-quality prints show better consistency with less banding when viewed with magnification. Most standard-quality prints produce excellent results and look just as good as high-quality ones from a distance.

Skin tones – colors are slightly duller than from alternative printers, as are the more saturated prints from Epson. Color and detail – the shadow details are impressive, although the contrast is slightly lower than expected, and we prefer the darker shadow areas. Canon handles very well details and finely patterned text.

By using the copier function to reproduce a previously printed photo, the difference between an original photo and a photocopy can be seen, with Canon producing a smoother look for photos. Therefore, we would recommend printing the original file or scanning the image and converting it on a computer if possible to get a more accurate print.

Verdict

The Canon Pixma MG8250 provides high-quality prints and scans of documents and films, although it may not be the best black-and-white document scan. One of the more impressive features of this all-in-one printer is the scanner’s ability to scan film and negatives up to 4800dpi, resulting in a massive 31.2-megapixel image. This printer also provides excellent wireless, USB, and ethernet connections. 

The printer is quiet when in use, with an additional silent mode, although you can see the sound of the scanner. While the cost of the printer may seem high, ink cartridge prices seem reasonable, with genuine ink from Canon costing £8 each, and compatible ink is also available for this model. While dedicated photo printers tend to produce slightly higher print quality, the Canon Pixma MG8250 does things very well and makes very impressive film scans and is therefore recommended.
